Homemade Gelatin Treats for Dogs, Cats

Homemade gelatin treats for dogs, cats provide a simple, quick to make health-supporting treat that your companion animal will love!

Homemade Gelatin Treats For Dogs, Cats - Recipe

You Will Need:
  • A bowl that can take boiling liquid.
  • A brownie or lasagna type casserole dish or pan that can take boiling liquid – do NOT use a Teflon-coated or aluminum pan (toxic!).
  • Mixing spoon and spatula
Ingredients for Homemade Gelatin Treats for Dog, Cat
  • Essential Ingredients
    • 1 cup boiling water (use filtered or spring water - do not use fluoridated water), or substitute water for 1 cup of broth
    • 1 cup gelatin powder
      •  I recommend using gelatin that is made from organically raised, or pasture-raised grass fed animals. Gelatin sourced from CAFO (Factory Farm) animals provides sub-standard nutrition, and is a source of toxic residue. Make sure the only ingredient in the powder is gelatin.
    • 1 cup bone-broth or broth.
      •  I recommend that you make your own bone broth or broth. By doing so you can control the ingredients, and avoid health threatening ingredients found in most commercial made products – i.e. GMOs and GMO derived food additives, salt, sugar, MSG (listed ingredient and hidden ingredient), onion, etc.
  • Optional Ingredients - get creative!
    • Herbs
      • Add 1 tsp of organic or wild-crafted fresh or dry herbs. You can use just one herb or a combination of herbs, for example...
        • Basil
        • Bosweilla
        • Cinnamon (use Ceylon cinnamon, NOT cassia)
        • Chamomile
        • Ginger
        • Marjoram
        • Peppermint
        • Summer Savory
        • Sage
        • Note - if your dog or cat is suffering from a medical condition make sure you check condition, and drug interactions before using herbs.

  • Berries, Other Fruit or Veggies
  • Add some fresh or frozen-fresh, whole, or chopped...
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Kiwi slices
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Tart red cherries
  • Or select other options from the fruit and vegetables on this list
  • If your dog or cat has a urinary tract infection, try adding fresh or fresh-frozen cranberries.

Preparation:
  • Pour the gelatin powder into the bowl.
  • Pour the broth into the bowl, and allow to sit for one to two minutes.
  • Next, pour the boiling liquid into the bowl, stir the mixture until the gelatin is dissolved.
  • Pour the blended mixture into a pan.
  • Place in the refrigerator and allow to solidify.
  •  Cut into cubes, strips or shapes as desired.
Storage
  • Store in the refrigerator.
Offer to Your Dog or Cat
  • As a meal topper.
  • As a nutritious treat between meals.

Simple Bone Broth Gelatin (Gel, Jelly) Recipe

You will Need
  • A large stainless steel pot or crock pot/slow cooker
  • Filtered water
  • Bones (see below)
Recipe

Use bones without meat or bones that have a small amount of meat remaining on the bone.
Place 1 lbs, up to 2 lbs of bones in a pot or slow cooker – use bones from pasture raised, grass fed animals. CAFO raised animal bones do not contain sufficient collagen to support gelling, and the resulting gel will be nutrient poor.

To ensure sufficient gelatin include some chicken necks, heads, chicken feet, or fish heads – these are high in collagen which helps to create nutrient rich, healing gelatin.

Add only enough water to just cover the bones – the level of water may reduce during the cooking process- you can top-up the water to just cover the bones.

Add 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar.

Allow the bones to sit in the water /apple cider vinegar mixture for 20 to 30 minutes prior to heating the pot. If the ambient air is very warm only allow unheated pot to sit for 20 minutes.
Cook at a low heat for a minimum of 12 to 24 hours.

Cooking process is complete when some if not all bones turn to mush when pressed between your fingers. If cooking beef bones the total cooking time may extend to 72 hours.

When cooking is finished, strain the bone broth, allow to cool a little, and then pour into glass containers or wide mouth glass bottles, and refrigerate. Your bone broth gelatin can be stored in the refrigerator for a week or two. You can also freeze your bone broth gelatin in ice cube trays and give as a treat on a warm day. You can also freeze in glass containers and take out to defrost when needed.
