Are you using hydrogen peroxide to clean your dog or cat's wounds? Are you using hydrogen peroxide to treat your dog or cat's paw or skin issues? Ear infections or oral care issues?
Commercially produced hydrogen peroxide (e.g. pharmaceutical and food grade, sold in pharmacies) slows healing. It can also prevent healing. In this article I discuss why I recommend you avoid using hydrogen peroxide on your dog and cat's wounds, paws, other skin issues and ear infections.
To clean and sterilize insect bites, cuts, scrapes and wounds, treat ear infections and oral care issues, use natural alternatives. Examples of natural alternatives are provided in this article.
How Hydrogen Peroxide Inhibits Wound Healing
- Kills pathogens (e.g. bacteria).
- Does not discriminate between bad bacteria and good bacteria.
- Kills good bacteria naturally present on the skin. The good bacteria produces enzymes that are necessary to support skin health.
- Kills healthy cells that are required to heal wounds.
Issue 2 - Hydrogen Peroxide Causes ATP Depletion
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a molecule that exists in all living organisms on earth. At the cellular level, ATP is the main energy source for your dog and cat's key biological functions including:
- DNA and RNA synthesis requires ATP
- Muscle contractions
- Nerve impulse transmission, including proper functioning of the brain
- Protein synthesis
- ATP stores energy. When energy in a cell is required, ATP breaks down to make the energy available to the cell.
- Hydrogen peroxide depletes the level of ATP in cells.
- Without ATP, your dog and cat's body cannot produce new cells nor repair damaged cells.
Issue 3 - Connective Tissue Disrupting
Hydrogen peroxide reduces the body's ability to produce connective tissue.
Connective tissue helps move nutrients and other important substances between other types of tissues to heal your dog and cat's wounds.
Issue 4 - Hyaluronic Acid Depletion
Hydrogen peroxide reduces the body's natural ability to produce hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid supports your dog and cat's eye, joint and skin health.
Issue 5 - Proteoglycan Depletion
Proteoglycan are a type of protein that occur naturally in your dog and cat's body. Proteoglycans help regulate cellular processes. The body requires protoglycans to enable healthy functioning of connective tissue.
Hydrogen peroxide reduces the body's ability to produce proteoglycans.
Issue 6 - Damaged Molecules and Compounds
When hydrogen peroxide comes into contact with the body's cells it causes the release of damaged molecules and compounds that interfere with healing and blood vessel formation. Healthy blood vessels are necessary to support healing of your dog and cat's wounds.
So, what should you use on your dog and cat's wounds instead of hydrogen peroxide?

Important Note
1.0 Use of Foods, Herbs, Alternative Medicines:
Safe use of items and protocols in the article above, is your sole responsibility.
Foods, herbs and alternative medicines have health issue, condition and conventional drug interactions. Safe use of all substances and protocol are your responsibility.
Before you use any substance or protocol do your research. Check for cautions, contradictions, interactions and side effects. Do not use substances or protocols not suitable to your animal's individual circumstances.
If your animal has an underlying condition substances and protocols may conflict.
2.0 Definition of Holistic…
Food, herbs, alternative medicines are NOT ‘holistic’ they are a substance and MAY, or may NOT be ‘NATURAL’.
If you use a ‘natural’ substance (ie. an herb) you are using a natural substance, not a holistic substance.
Holistic is not defined by use of one or several substances. Holistic is an approach.
Definition of “holistic” from the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus © Cambridge University Press
Adjective
"relating to the whole of something or to the total system instead of just to its parts"
"Holistic medicine attempts to treat the whole person, including mind and body, not just the injury or disease."
Holistic is a way of approaching life, and within that health, and well-being.
3.0 Expectation a natural substance remedies a health or behavioral situation.
A natural substance used to treat symptoms. But, if factors causing the underlying issue remain you do not have a remedy.
Remedy requires a comprehensive approach. It is necessary to identify root cause. Remove items that trigger, cause or otherwise contribute to issues. Holistic approach includes design, implementation to treat, remedy and maintain long-term health.
