Diatomaceous Earth - Food Grade

Also consider giving your dog, cat Diatomaceous Earth (DE). DE consists of fossilized marine life with a high silica content and honeycomb structure. DE has agricultural, industrial and household uses , it is also used as a detoxing agent for human and non-human animals. Use only food grade organic DE for your dog, cat and yourself.

  • DE rids the body of:
    • Parasites such as lice, ticks, fleas, mites and worms (DE is not effective on heartworm);
    • Harmful bacteria and some viruses;
    • Methyl Mercury;
    • E. coli;
    • Organophosphate pesticide residues;
    • Drug residues.

As inoculations routinely provided to cats and dogs contain toxins, it is advisable to follow-up inoculations with a regime of DE.

When you are adding DE to your dog's or cat's diet I recommend adding more moisture to their food as DE will make your dog or cat more thirsty. You can add some fresh chicken stock, 100% aloe vera juice, rooibos tea, etc.  My dog's get all three liquids added to their meal once a day.

Daily Dosage for DE

  • Cats – 1 tsp
  • Small Dogs – ½ tsp
  • Medium Dogs (under 50 lbs) – 1tsp
  • Large Dogs (50 to 100 lbs) – 1tbs

Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum)

Milk thistle is a flowering plant from the Aster family. Used as a herb, it is a detox agent and in the treatment of diseases such as diabetes, liver failure and IBS (irritable bowl syndrome). Milk Thistle can actually promotes the regrowth of liver cells. It has been used since the time of the Roman Emperors as a liver tonic. It is one of the few traditional healing herbs that has been widely accepted by conventional modern science as having significant medicinal value. The flavonoid compound 'silymarin' is the active health promoting ingredient in milk thistle.

Milk Thistle can be purchased in three forms for use as a supplement - capsule, liquid and powder form.

To Cut Down on Preparation Time - For items such as Cranberries and Lemon…

  • I chop (the finer the better) enough of the foodstuff in the food processor to last several days to a week;
  • Then I put the chopped food in containers - plastic (BPA free) or glass;
  • I leave the appropriate sized measuring spoon in the container – this little convenience makes it faster to prepare the meal at feeding time.

Note -

1.0 Use of Foods, Herbs, Nutraceuticals and Alternative Medicines:

When choosing to use any of the items or protocols in the article above, it is your responsibility to ensure safe use of the item/protocol. Food, herbs, nutraceuticals and alternative medicines all have drug interactions, most have health issue contradictions, some have side effects. Use of substances and protocols are your responsibility. Prior to use of any substance or protocol make sure you do your research - check for all cautions, contradictions,interactions, side effects. If in doubt do not use the substance or protocol. If the substance, or protocol is contradicted for your animal do not use. If your animal has an underlying condition you are not aware of substances may conflict with that condition.

2.0 The Real Meaning of Holistic…

Food, herbs, nutraceuticals and alternative medicines are NOT ‘holistic’ they are a substance and MAY, or may NOT be ‘NATURAL’. It is important to keep in mind that the supplement industry is just as unethical as BigPharma, the Food and Pet Food Industry, and unfortunately many veterinarians.

If you use a ‘natural’ substance (i.e. an herb) you are using a natural substance, this is not synonymous with holistic.

Holistic is a way of approaching life, and within that - overall health, and wellbeing.

Please do not expect a natural substance to miraculously remedy a health or behavioral situation. A natural substance may be used to treat symptoms. However, if the factors causing the underlying issue are not properly identified, analyzed and addressed you do not have a remedy.

Remedy requires a comprehensive approach that identifies root cause, seeks to remove items that trigger, cause or otherwise contribute to issues, and builds a complete, and detailed approach to immediate treatment, remedy, and maintenance of long-term health = holistic.
