1.0 New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel
(also known as Perna, New Zealand Green Mollusk, NZGLM, etc.)

New Zealand green lipped mussel is a species of shellfish that can only be found in the waters and on the shores of New Zealand. Green Lipped Mussels are a traditional food of the Maoris – indigenous people of New Zealand. The use of green lipped muscles as an alternative medicine is relatively new to the western world. The benefits of Green Lipped Muscles were noted by the western world upon observation of the Maoris people – specifically that the incidence of arthritis among the Maoris people was very low.

Green Lipped Mussel (NZGLM) Can Be Added To The Diet In Several Ways

1. Raw or Steamed
 
2. Freeze Dried or Dehydrated
 
3. Extracted Oil
 
4. Freeze Dried Powder


Medicinal Properties of NZGLM
Green Lipped Mussels contain mucopolysaccharides – building blocks of the body that are found in every type of body tissue and are an important component of cartilage and synovial (joint) fluid. Components of mucopolysaccharides include:
  
NZGLM also contain:
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (also an anti-inflammatory).
  •  Minerals.
  • Protein.
Like other alternative medicines  it takes a little time (i.e. several weeks) for the effects of green lipped muscle to start evidencing a decrease in inflammation and pain.

3.0 Cautions

If your dog or cat:
  • Has liver disease
  • Is allergic to shell fish do not use NZGLM
    • Signs of an allergic reaction include:
      • Abdominal pain
      • Chest tightness
      • Difficulty breathing
      • Itching
      • Hives
      • Swelling of the face or hands
      • Swelling or tingling in the:
        •  Mouth
        • Throat
      • Vomiting

4.0 Side Effects
In some individuals may cause:
  • Abnormal liver
  • Diarrhea
  • Heart disease
  • Intestinal gas
  • Lung dysfunction
  • Fluid retention
  • Skin rash
  •  Respiratory problems
  • Nausea      
  • In rare cases it NZGLM may cause liver problems.

5.0 Drug Interactions
  • Use caution when taking in tandem with anti-inflammatory drugs, herbs or supplements as NZGLM may enhance effects and side effects.

6.0 Daily Serving

Raw, Steamed, Dehydrated or Freeze Dried
 
X-Small Dogs - 2 to 10 lbs
1/8 mussel per day.
 
Small Dogs - 11 to 19 lbs
1/4 mussel per day.
 
Medium Dogs - 20 lbs to 39 lbs
1/2 to 1 mussel per day.
 
Large Dogs - 40 lbs to 79 lbs
1 to 2 mussels per day.

X-Large Dogs - 80+ lbs
2 to 4 mussels per day.

  • 2 lbs to 20 lbs - 250 mg per day
Dogs
  • 25 to 50 lbs - 500 mg per day
  • 51 - 75 lbs - 750 mg per day
  • 75 lbs to 100 lbs - 1000 mg per day
  • 100+ lbs - 1250 mg per day
