1.0 About Ear Mites
Ear mites are tiny surface mites, about the size of a pinhead. Ear mites can infest cats, dogs, ferrets, fox, guinea pigs, rabbits, other small animals, ruminants and humans (rare). Ear mites are highly contagious and can be passed from one species of animal to another.
Ear mites spend the majority of their time in the dark, warm, moist environment of an animal's ear canal. Mites feed on dead skin cells, keratin and fatty compounds naturally present in live skin cells. The life cycle of an ear mite is approximately 3 weeks. Female ear mites fasten their eggs to the keratin in the ear canal. The eggs hatch, grow into adult mites and lay more eggs.
Left untreated or improperly treated an ear mite infestation causes great discomfort, can result in secondary ear infection (bacterial or fungal), and ultimately cause damage to the ear.
2.0 Symptoms of Ear Mite Infestation
When ear mites infest your dog and cat's ear canal, the skin becomes irritated and inflamed. The body reacts by producing ear wax. The ear wax builds up, causing additional irritation. As ear mites die, hatch and reproduce the ear wax becomes thicker, laden with detritus and dead mites. Eventually the wax can block the ear canal.
To help relieve the discomfort your dog or cat may excessively itch and scratch her ear. This can cause broken skin, resulting in a secondary bacterial or fungal infection.
Symptoms of an ear mite infestation include:
- Red, inflamed skin of the ear flap and/or ear canal.
- Itchy ears.
- Repeated shaking of the head.
- Dark thick brown, crumbly waxy discharge from the ear.
- Crusty discharge from ear.
- Unpleasant odour emanating from the ear.
- Fur loss around the ear flap.
- Thickening of the skin.
- Blockage of the ear canal.
3.0 Dogs and Cats Most Vulnerable to Ear Mite Infestations
Dogs and cats with an under-performing immune system are most vulnerable to ear mite infestation. The primary cause of acquired, (as opposed to inherited) immune system vulnerability includes:
- A highly processed dry food or wet food diet.
- Conventional flea, tick, heartworm products.
- Conventional medications.
- A species appropriate diet.
- Natural insect, parasite prevention aids.
- Natural personal care protocol.
NO conventional medications.
